The United States Postal Service (USPS) has launched the National Dog Bite Prevention Week which will take place the week of May 18-24. Given that thousands of postal carriers across the nation have been attacked and bitten by dogs, we can understand why they would promote this initiative.
We urge you to be a responsible dog owner. Follow these tips in order to avoid dog bites:
• Put your dog(s) through obedience training in order to teach them proper behavior. This training also helps you control your dogs. • If a postal carrier comes to your door, keep your dog inside. • Don’t allow your child to take mail from the postman in front of your dog. The dog’s instinct is to protect you and your family. • Spay or neuter your dog. Dogs that are fixed are less likely to bite. • Dogs that receive attention and affection are less likely to bite or attack people.
Keep in mind that the state of Virginia has the “One Bite” law, which means that the first time a dog bites someone, the person who was bitten can’t sue the owner of the dog. If you’ve been bitten by a dog in the Richmond, Virginia area, we can help you with your case.
